Stylist Lance Christopher Says Permed and Pretty Is Back

by Lance Christopher

July 13, 2003

All trends, especially hairstyles, are cyclical. Staying upward on the spiral of style, the once preeminent look of the 80's—the perm—is back. But according to Lance, stylist and owner of Lance Christopher Salon in Beverly Hills, these curls have a twist.

"The 80's perm was a hard core chemical treatment," says Lance. "It was extremely damaging to the hair. But in this era of healthy living, today's perms are more natural and gentle." The brand of perm currently used by Lance is Wella. The contributing factor to the healthy-looking outcome is the perm's softer ingredients and less ammonia. The goal is a looser curl. "The purpose of the perm is primarily to add lustrous body and wave to the hair. We stay away from tight spiral curls and the little orphan Annie look!

The return of the perm is all part of women's increasing proclivity to be pretty and feminine again after years of cropped cuts and waifish looks. At his station, Lance enhances the looks of Hollywood icons and succeeds in making all hair gorgeous while at the same time virtually wash-and-wear.

"The key to a naturally beautiful look with both perms and straight hair is the layers. When the layers are rounded, and not just cut off in straight blocks, there are fewer flyaway pieces, and less chance for frizzing. The hair is lighter and bouncy," says Lance.

The best look for fall is healthy control! Lance looks at what the client wants, while maintaining good, healthy hair. The demise of the bad hair day has been achieved with his styles.
